May 6, 2025 Feeling uncertain or overwhelmed is natural if you’re facing an unexpected pregnancy. You may be wondering what your options are and what each one involves. At The Legacy Center, we’re here to walk alongside you with care, support, and accurate information, starting with a breakdown of the two main types of abortion. Understanding your options is an important first step in making a confident and informed decision. Medical Abortion (The Abortion Pill) A medical abortion uses two drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol, to end an early pregnancy. This option is FDA-approved for use through 10 weeks gestation and is typically done at home. Mifepristone blocks the hormone progesterone, which is needed to maintain the pregnancy. Misoprostol causes the uterus to contract, leading to cramping and bleeding to expel the pregnancy. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, diarrhea, and headache. Surgical Abortion Surgical abortion happens in a clinic or hospital, usually later in pregnancy. It starts with dilating the cervix so a doctor can use suction, scraping tools, or forceps (for later stages) to remove the pregnancy from the uterus. You might get sedation to ease discomfort, and it’s done in one visit or several, depending on how far along you are. It’s more hands-on than medical abortion. You may stay in a waiting room for a few hours after to monitor for excessive bleeding or complications. Common side effects are light spotting and cramping for a few days after the procedure.
