Give Them Time To Process

Many people often have strong reactions when you tell them about an unexpected pregnancy. It’s important to understand that this reaction is often about them and comes from a place of fear, surprise, and uncertainty.

It’s wise to give your partner time to process their feelings so they can respond more calmly and thoughtfully. This may mean giving them space in the meantime and leaning on your support network while you navigate this.

Confirm Your Pregnancy

The next step, if you believe you have an unexpected pregnancy, is to confirm it with a pregnancy test and an ultrasound. An ultrasound will give you important information about your pregnancy and how it is developing, such as its location and gestational age (how far along you are).

Having this accurate information means you can move forward with clarity and make informed decisions, regardless of your partner’s support.

Reach Out For The Support You Deserve

During this process, it’s important to surround yourself with people who offer non-judgmental support. You do not need to feel alone in this.

Hearing different perspectives can be helpful if your partner’s response is causing you pressure or unnecessary stress. You could reach out to a family member, friends, or pregnancy centers like ours for support and information surrounding your options.

If your partner is attempting to pressure or control your pregnancy decision by using intimidation or guilt, this could be a sign of emotional abuse or an unhealthy relationship. In this case, it’s essential to seek outside support so you don’t feel isolated.

If you ever feel you are in an unsafe situation, reach out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233, available 24/7.
