Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle

Your menstrual cycle consists of four phases and begins on the first day of your period and ends when your next period begins. A menstrual cycle averages 28 days; however, variation is normal.

The menstrual phase, also known as your period, is when pregnancy is least likely, although pregnancy can still occur if you are sexually active. This is closely followed by the follicular phase, also known as the lead-up to ovulation. Fertility rises in the days before you ovulate, and sperm can live inside the reproductive tract for up to five days, meaning you can become pregnant during the days leading up to ovulation and after.

Ovulation happens about halfway through your menstrual cycle, but it can vary due to stress, hormonal shifts, and other changes. This can make it difficult to predict exactly when pregnancy is possible.

After ovulation comes the luteal phase, before your period. If an egg has not been fertilized, your body will prepare for menstruation. Fertility is lower during this phase.

Tracking Ovulation

Tracking your ovulation can help you identify when you are most fertile and provide you with a clearer understanding of your menstrual cycle.

Not everyone has regular cycles; therefore, understanding your bodily changes throughout your cycle can help you identify when you may be ovulating.

Common ways include:

  • Ovulation predictor kits – These kits detect the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge, which occurs shortly before an egg is released, in urine.
  • Cervical mucus monitoring – Cervical mucus is clear, stretchy, and has a similar texture to egg whites.
  • Basal body temperature – Taking your temperature in the morning every day before you get out of bed can reveal when you might be ovulating. A slight increase in temperature can indicate ovulation.
