December 3, 2024 Trying to figure out when you can get pregnant can be confusing, especially if you’re trying to plan or avoid pregnancy. Many women seek to better understand their fertility to feel more confident and in control of their reproductive health. If you’re feeling unsure about timing, you’re not alone. Learning more about how your body works can make a big difference in managing your fertility. What Is Ovulation? Ovulation occurs when one of your ovaries releases an egg, which remains viable for fertilization for about 12–24 hours. The days leading up to ovulation and the day of ovulation are when your chances of conception are highest. This phase, considered the most fertile part of your cycle, typically takes place around the midpoint of your menstrual cycle. For example, in a 28-day cycle, ovulation often happens around day 14, though it can vary depending on the woman. How Can I Tell If I’m Ovulating? If your menstrual cycle isn’t regular, or if you’re unsure about your timing, some signs can help you identify when you’re ovulating: Vaginal discharge changes: Around ovulation, you may notice an increase in thin, slippery discharge that looks like egg whites. After ovulation, this often decreases and becomes thicker. Body temperature shifts: Your basal body temperature (when your body is at rest) rises slightly during ovulation. To track this, take your temperature each morning before getting out of bed using a basal thermometer. Over time, you can look for patterns that indicate your most fertile days. Additionally, ovulation predictor kits, available over the counter, can provide more specific insights.
