If you’re not ready to parent and you don’t want to abort, then adoption may have come to mind.

It’s important to know that adoptions have changed dramatically in the last few decades. Today, you’re not “giving up” your baby as it was regarded in the past. Instead, adoption is a parenting decision that gives your child hope and a future.

Is Adoption Right for Me?

Adoption is a complex decision, and there are many details to consider.

Adoption requires carrying your pregnancy to term and then working with an adoption agency or attorney to create an adoption plan, choose the adoptive family, and more.

While only you can decide if adoption is right for you, asking yourself the following questions can help:

  • What might my life look like if I choose adoption?
  • How might I feel if I choose adoption?
  • Do I have any questions about the adoption process?

You may wonder about changing your mind or whether your partner will agree with your choice. We can help you navigate those questions or refer you to a reputable adoption agency.

What Types of Adoption Plans Are There?

Three main types of adoption plans are available, each fully customizable.

When you choose adoption, you will work closely with an adoption agency or attorney to create one of these adoption plans:

Open Adoption

Open adoption is the most flexible adoption option. Open adoption means you and the adoptive family and child can build a relationship through face-to-face meetings, phone calls, letters, emails, etc.

However, open adoption isn’t legally enforceable in North Carolina. That’s why finding an adoptive couple interested in continuing communication is important.

Closed Adoption

Closed adoptions are rare today. In a closed adoption, you will remain anonymous to the adoptive family and child. You can still choose the adoptive family, but you’ll have no interaction with them before or after the birth.

Semi-Open Adoption

In a semi-open adoption, all communication between you and the adoptive family is mediated by a third party, like the adoption agency or attorney. A semi-open adoption is a good option if you want your contact information to remain anonymous to the adoptive family and child.
